Services for Faculty

Information Technology works with faculty to enhance teaching and research and dissemination of faculty work. We offer various levels of support from guidance to full-fledged project development and assistance with simple to complex uses of technology. For new faculty, here are Frequently Asked Questions.

Teaching Support

If you have a project or approach for your course that involves technology, we would be happy to work with you to develop the technological tool. We are also available to brainstorm ideas with you. The examples below show the different types of services we have provided for various courses.

Course exercises where students create multi-media content

· Blackboard: students can share thoughts, files, photos and comment on each others' work
· Students analyze poems and poets outside of class time; they can read and comment on each other’s work 24/7
In-class
· Clickers : Students use "clickers" to respond to instructor's question and instructor gets instant summary of results
· Online Sign-up Tool: a tool to use when in-class sign up sheets are taking too much of your time

Research Support

data logger Geology Professor, Dr. Peter Lea, checks a remote field datalogger at Crystal Springs Farm near Brunswick. The datalogger is one of several deployed with help from IT to automate near-real-time data collection and subsequently make monitoring data available to Bowdoin scientists.

For various research projects, we have assisted with data management, analytical tools, communication, and dissemination. For quantitative data-intensive research, we have designed efficient database management system to ensure data integrity and have set up field instruments so that they communicate with the network. For both qualitative and quantitative research, we offer tools and services for analysis and visualization, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or a custom-built scroll viewer. For longer term or collaborative research, we can also assist with creating collaborative and communication tools such as project web sites, group shared file and notation space.

Web Pages for Faculty and Departments

Information Technology has a dedicated staff member to assist and consult in forming online content customized for faculty specific needs. Typically working with a few departments per semester, and individual faculty members as needed. Examples of services provided range from:

  • Simple formatting of CVs for the web and arranging for professional portraits.
  • Creating areas of specific content and scholar specific projects
  • Digitizing groups of Word, RTF and PDF articles for easier viewing online
  • Flash-enabled application for viewing movie clips of scientific experimentation
  • Departmental sites
  • Showcasing student research… and everything in-between
